CMP.ly 利益申報: CMP.ly level 2
Lunar New Year is coming up, and people are already greeting each other with goodwill proverbs like “Be healthy” (身體健康), “Be lucky and had windfall” (橫財就手), Kung Hei Fat Choi, i.e. get rich (恭喜發財) or “get what you wish for” (心想事成).
However, I kinda not like the last one. From what I experienced last year, I realized one thing: You can wish for whatever you want, but wishing doesn’t make things happen, doing things does.
Let me give you an example. I took up pottery last year, and had been continuously churning up pottery pieces every month or so. It is fascinating, all the things you can create with just clay balls and slabs, with just a few tools and your hands. Now, I love pottery pieces in the past, but never really considered to learn how to make it myself. That I got the idea and opportunity is really by chance.
That said, the thing I realized from my classes is: no matter how much you like pottery pieces, if you want the piece to be exactly what you want it to be, you have got to roll up your sleeves, don an apron, and get your hands dirty by shaping the clay yourself. And even then, there is no guarantee whether the piece will turn out the way you want it to be, there are so many factors, be it heat and moisture, the clay itself, how you handle it, that affect the final product.
But there is no reason to not doing it, even though there is a limit in what we can influence the way things go.
So, I won’t greet you with “get what you wish for”. Instead, I wish you “start doing what you wish for, and get it” (坐言起行,努力事成).
Imagine
Written and Performed by John Lennon
Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Life is short. But it should be long enough.
I am not a Mac, and I am not a PC. I am just me. I do not become the computer I use, I use the computer.
I use a Mac, a PC or two, and an iPhone. They are my tools for productivity and information, my toys, and my connection to the world. They do not shape how I am, do not define who I am.
Stop bickering about what computer you should use to be cool. Computers are just tools, like our hands and feet, eyes and ears, nose and mouth, an extension of our existence. We will be cool, if we want to, no matter what tools we use. Make the tools we want to use, and we will use them. And, make them simple to use, stupid.
I am not a Mac, and I am not a PC. I am just me. Get a grip, people.
p.s. Apparently, this is a response to the new Microsoft “I am a PC” ad on people loving the PC, and the Apple “Get a Mac” ads making fun on PC users. While I like both set of ads initially, I loath them both now. Who is to say whether anyone is a dork, or anyone is a hypocrite, just because she use a different OS? I hate this kind of thinking.
