蘋果九月一日發報會 (九月二日早上修訂)

又是蘋果一年一度的音樂產品發報會。

今次一如市場所料,新版iPod Touch果然有前、後置鏡頭,Retina Display 及FaceTime,沒有硬體閃燈,只可以拍720P影片,相片是960X720,共有8GB,32GB及64GB三款,售價分别為229、299及399美元。

另外,Nano大變身,成為有multitouch螢幕、收音機的大Shuffle,共有8GB及16GB兩款。Shuffle重新回歸二代的外形,五種顏色選擇,在蘋果網站購則有(PRODUCT)RED的紅色追加選擇,售價為49美元。Classic則維持現狀。

AppleTV並不如市場所料般改名,仍是AppleTV。外形方面,因為不設內置儲存,大幅縮小至上代的四分一。輸出有HDMI,網絡有Wifi及Ethernet。內置軟件可以直接租電影(4.99美元)及電視劇(0.99美元),亦可使用Netflix、YouTube、Flickr、MobileMe,更可利用同時發表的AirPlay(前身為AirTunes,iOS 4.2專用)由iPad串流影片至AppleTV,影片質素為720P。售價為99美元。

有iOS 4.2,自然有iOS 4.1。iOS 4.1將會在下星期開始提供免費下載,仍是以iPhone、iPod Touch為主,主要是bug fix,新功能有HDR相片拍攝、以Wifi上載HD影片、加入電視節目租賃,並重新加入4.0中被移除的Game Center。

至於iOS 4.2將會在十一月推出,是免費下載,把iOS 4.X的功能轉移至iPad為主,並會包括可作影片、音樂串流的AirPlay。據知AirPlay將會在其他廠商的喇叭、dock,相信會有很大的商業潛力。

另一方面,iTunes 10加入Ping social network,以音樂為本位,可以follow歌手及其他用家,品評音樂。在美國用户還可以搜尋演唱會資料,功能算是豐富,但相信並非衝著Facebook而來。

呼…實在很充實呢。

九月二日早上修訂:
1/ 今日最少兩份報紙(蘋果日報、頭條日報)均指新iPod Touch有3G功能,實屬錯誤理解。根據蘋果公司官方網站有關iPod Touch的規格,並無3G功能。各準買家請留心。

iPhone 4

在今晨的WWDC keynote上,Steve Jobs公佈了有關四代iPhone – iPhone 4的詳情。

如之前所料,失竊的iPhobe原形機果然就是iPhone 4。硬件方面,前置鏡頭、LED閃光燈、全新設計,這些都已經知道。但機體金屬部份以不銹鋼製、內建GPS(不是3Gs的AGPS)、砣螺儀、使用micro SIM、更大的電池等,倒是第一次聽說。

內建的iOS4(iPhone OS的新名字)之前已有相當報導,但仍有新功能:新增的iBooks能支援pdf,亦可做書籤、寫筆記,亦支援iBoostore WiFi下載電子書。新增的FaceTime視像功能,可使用前或後置鏡頭作視像對話,將成為民間記者之恩物。iMovie for iPhone更將影片編輯帶入iPhone界面,並可支援內建的五百萬像素鏡頭作720p拍攝。

面對iPhone 4將於七月與iPad同期在港發售,相信一眾蘋果人將會相當頭痛。但我則應該只會購入iPad(除非今晚六合彩頭獎由我一注獨得吧…),因為我實在不能再忍受出外工作要帶備重得要死的MacBook了。再者,既然iOS4本月底便會推出,iPhone 3Gs除了硬件不同之外,大部份功能都可與iPhobe 4共通,我想我的3Gs已經足夠使用。

I am not a Mac, and I am not a PC.

I am not a Mac, and I am not a PC. I am just me. I do not become the computer I use, I use the computer.

I use a Mac, a PC or two, and an iPhone. They are my tools for productivity and information, my toys, and my connection to the world. They do not shape how I am, do not define who I am.

Stop bickering about what computer you should use to be cool. Computers are just tools, like our hands and feet, eyes and ears, nose and mouth, an extension of our existence. We will be cool, if we want to, no matter what tools we use. Make the tools we want to use, and we will use them. And, make them simple to use, stupid.

I am not a Mac, and I am not a PC. I am just me. Get a grip, people.

p.s. Apparently, this is a response to the new Microsoft “I am a PC” ad on people loving the PC, and the Apple “Get a Mac” ads making fun on PC users. While I like both set of ads initially, I loath them both now. Who is to say whether anyone is a dork, or anyone is a hypocrite, just because she use a different OS? I hate this kind of thinking.

Google Chrome用後感

Google最近動作多多,這兩日最大的宣佈相信是新瀏覽器Chrome的面世。昨日一覺醒來,收到網友的通風報訊後,就第一時間下載試用。

技術面的太專門,不詳述了,請自行到Google揾啦。我會從用家的角度與大家分享一下:

- 速度相當好,大概是因為Chrome使用比較快的瀏覽器引擎Webkit的緣故。另外,因為暫時還未有任何插件,loading自然比較快。當然,亦因為沒有插件,所以與Firefox 3或IE 7比較,功能上自然仍有啲距離。
- 經測試後,一些我常到的IE friendly網站,Chrome都能成功進入。
- 各大microblog均成功過關,但Facebook就有少少唔穩定,有時睇notification會跳出home screen或404(即係load唔到)。
- WordPress同Drupal完全冇問題,運作正常。
- Google自家服務就當然冇問題啦,冇走位冇load錯野。

結果,個人認為如果對上網冇特別要求,要睇webmail、睇YouTube、玩flash game都係完全稱職,重要唔係大食(電腦資源而言),令我好滿意。但我唔會由Firefox跳船過檔…因為Chrome冇插件。雖然Chrome完全支援Google嘅服務,但並無in browser嘅介面,而係幫你做shortcut落desktop…再者,我個人對Firefox嘅插件依賴甚深,短期內都係難以脫身。

不過,如果我要好快咁查一啲野,而我又唔想用iPhone咁細個screen嚟睇,Google Chrome會係必然選擇。

p.s. IE8都可以收工喇,咁玩法Microsoft好難追…

Ha, I see a lot of glasses on the ground~

So, Steve Jobs proved yet again that any ideas that he reject in public repeatively will become a reality.

The video iPod will be offered in 30 and 60GB models, with battery power at 14 and 20 hours respectively. A 2.5 inch screen and a smaller click wheel will be on the ever-thinner iPod, which is now around half an inch thick only. And it is the same price as the 4th generation iPod: USD299 for 30GB, and USD399 for 60GB. Just in time for the Christmas Season rush. I W.A.N.T one!!!!

On a separate note, iTunes got the second update in one month’s time. The new iTunes will of course support video playback, and will allow customers to buy music video and TV shows from iTMS, Apple’s own legal media download shop. Among the new features, the one I like is the service which allow users to buy a media item (music/video), and then send it to a friend as a gift. It works even if the recipient is not a iTMS user.

Finally, the iMac, not the PowerMac, that got a facelift. It now has build-in Dual-Layer Super Drive on all models, and build in iChat on the monitor. A new software called Front Row will allow users to play music/video away from the computer, using a remote control. This little app is the apparent answer to Windows XP Media edition.

Now, since almost all of the products announced today are aiming at Microsoft, I wonder if the next product before Mactel will be a revival of… Newton? We will see.

iPod Nano (updated)

Enough said. Apple, you had to see them to believe them, these guys are really amazing. Nevermind Rokr, you were never meant to be the real secret weapon of Apple this time.Spec:

Storage: 2GB or 4GB
Screen: 1.5 inch color LCD with backlight
Battery life: 14 hours (just music); 4 hours (music with slideshow)
Connect to USB through dock connector
Click Wheel
Format support: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Music Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3 and 4), Apple Lossless, WAV, AIFF
Photo support: Syncs iPod-viewable photos in JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, PSD (Mac only) and PNG formats
Weight: 1.5 ounces (42.5 grams) [about 2 iPod Shuffles]

BTW, I just worked out a cost by GB comparison of the whole iPod family here. As you can see, the price/GB for Nano is actually not too bad when comparing with the mini, which has no photo support and no color screen. However, this comparison is only true for the 4GB model; the 2GB model is not going to be a great buy, faring almost as bad as a 1GB shuffle on cost/GB.

So, who is the Nano targeting for? I guess it can become the 2nd iPod of choice, replacing the shuffle. Also, Nano is the lightweight iPod of choice for anyone who does not want a full size iPod, now that the mini is gone. Beyond that, I can imagine a big maybe for phasing out the shuffle in the no-so-near future. This will go well with the slim product line that Jobs & Co. like, and will be beneficial to the overall brand, if the so-called V-Pod were introduced in the near future.

(Update: the iPod mini is not completely phase-out yet, you can still find it on Apple’s online store for Hong Kong.)

Apple launch iTunes Music Store in Japan

This is most welcoming news for J-pop enthusiasts. At 150-200 yen per song, it is a great bargain to buy songs there. Of course, whether anyone outside Japan can purchase songs without a local mailing address is anyone’s guess, but it is a great start anyway.

This also signifies the beginning of aggressive marketing efforts for Apple in Asia to sell more ‘pods and songs: if history is good enough as guidance, iTMS sells iPods, albeit indirectly through song sales. This is at least valid for US, which iTunes usage and iPod sales exploded ever since iTMS is available. Japan is probably the opening shot of Apple’s war on music against everybody else.

Now, where can I find a Japan address that works……. :P

Addendum: Just tested, no luck….. even my credit card does not work….. shoot!

More about iTunes 4.9

I sang high praises in my previous entry about iTunes 4.9. Now’s the bad stuff:

One of the podcasts that I subscribe had caused its playlist on my iPod Shuffle to sort from newest to oldest, instead of the other way around! It happens even if I had sorted the playlist that I keep on iTunes so that it is in chronological order! Thus, when I listen to that batch of podcasts, they were going back in time……..

Anybody know what happened? Any help will be highly appreciated!

Aside from that, it had been a blast for me playing with iTunes last night, when I subscribed most of the podcasts that I am currently listening to. Simple and elegant, that’s the way all programs should be!

Mactel?

猶記得在蘋果在推出PC版iTunes時的宣傳海報的口號: Hell froze over。六月二日,地獄再一次冰封:蘋果在WWDC2005宣佈將在二零零七年底前全線採用英特爾處理器,為PowerPC年代與及和IBM的夥伴關係 劃上句號。我想,雖然這消息對一眾Mac友會是極為震憾,但自從五月底華爾街日報的報導出台後,網內外的討論不絕,相信消息已被消化。

話 雖如此,蘋果這一舉動對新進switcher來說並不討好:他們辛辛苦苦逃出英特爾的「魔掌」,卻發覺仍是要用英特爾硬件。另外,死忠Mac友中必然會有 不少人認為蘋果背叛了自己:PowerPC/Mac OS組合一直以來是蘋果用來對抗英特爾的旗幟。現在,蘋果「今日的我打倒昨日的我」改投英特爾家族,自然令部分死忠用家不滿。

然而, Mactel的結合未必是壞事。從蘋果的角度來看,加入英特爾陣營好處甚多,例如以economy of scale減低成本。再者,IBM在PowerPC的開發上似乎並停滯不前,3Ghz PowerPC及notebook用G5 到今仍然未見蹤影。無論這是因為熱量/用電量或是製程上出現問題,IBM無力在短期內推出新版G5已是不爭的事實。另外,過去一年IBM在PowerPC 的策略已經轉向家用遊戲機,Mac已經被忽略;其實,從任天堂在GameCube起用PowerPC後,今年所有新世代家用遊戲機 (PS3/X360/Revolution)都使用PowerPC的CPU。在商機上,與蘋果「分手」雖然殺傷力甚大,但新世代家用遊戲機的市場潛力比個 人電腦好。遊戲機方面的收入應可填補蘋果離開的空缺。如此形勢,蘋果乘關係良好時「變心」,總比到IBM應付「三大巨頭」應接不暇之時被掃地出門好。再 者,Mac的最大買點從來都是優良的界面設計、比PC好的圖象處理能力、整體表現比PC優勝。G5的開發問題已令Mac與PC在整體表現上的差別收窄,如 不立即解決,後果不堪設想。

影響

對一眾用家而言,如果不考慮情意結因素,加入英特爾陣營其實並無太大影響。第一,現有的Mac短期內不受影 響,以Cocoa/Carbon開發的程式開發會繼續,只是會由XCode 2.1以PPC/Mactel雙制式進行。故此,在往後三至四年內PPC軟件不會停產。第二,現在的Mac已經不是獨家硬件,用一般PC元件已不是第一天 的事。以蘋果的開發傳統 – 統一的硬件設計,整體的設計仍會以蘋果的需要為先,除了實際表現外,用甚麼處理器並不是最重要的。再者,作業糸統才是電腦的界面,作業糸統好用其實比處理 器更重要。

對程式開發人員而言,問題只會是Mactel機用作對應Cocoa/Carbon程式的系統 – Rosetta的實際表現。由於Rosetta是Mactel機使用PowerPC的唯一介面,它的能力直接與Mactel機的兼容性/成功與否有莫大的關係。

現 時,開發人員對Mactel的感覺不俗。例如,iPodderX的開發組(註)表示他們的程式碼轉移(recompile)只需數小時,需要重寫的程式碼 亦是極少數。當然,大部份商業軟件(如Photoshop/Microsoft Office)的程式碼都比較複雜,XCode2.1在轉移這些軟件的成效如何仍是未知之數。

前景如何?

雖然蘋果在轉用 處理器上有例可援(68X00->PPC),這一次的轉移會有多順利絕對是未知之數。另外,現有的PPC版Mac的銷情將會下滑亦令人擔憂。無論如 何,投向英特爾將會是Steve Jobs重返蘋果後最大的賭博:蘋果的將來換往後十年的發展。一年後的情況如何將會十分有趣。

iPod Shuffle初哥下海記

寫在前面:先此聲明,筆者以前有用過Apple的產品,一早己被Apple的halo effect所迷倒,故本文不求持平,但求對準買家有指導作用,如有錯漏,請多多指教。

iPod Shuffle:最抵買的iPod?

iPod 在近年成功擊退MD、MP3等音樂播放機,成為隨身聽的王者,蘋果電腦集合優良而追上潮流的設計、與iTunes的整合、易用等優點,令iPod 大賣特賣,更進而取代walkman成為新一代潮流文化標誌。然而,蘋果在定價一直高企,iPod又比一般亞洲廠商的MP3播放機笨重,故此,雖然 iPod mini 的推出在一定程度上成功在中價市場上打出名堂,但前面的因素始終令iPod在日本以外的亞洲市場發展比歐美為慢。有見及此,今年一月蘋果終於祭出它的必殺 一擊 – iPod Shuffle – 一部在精密計算下誕生,針對低價市場的iPod。

為達致低價的定位,蘋果在Shuffle的策略上作出多項大膽的嘗試:棄用螢幕、把功能減至最基本的播放、機體外形亦大幅減磅。結果出人意表地有趣:機身 比一排香口膠更小,輕如無物,設計極盡簡約之能事。再加上flash memory功能,令其已經極有競爭力的定價更吸引。(當買一張512M flash drive已是三、四百之時,同容量的Shuffle只是七百八十,播放機功能其實只售三百元左右。)

好,看到這裏,大家應該會問:好用/抵買嗎?筆者會如此答:好用,但抵買與否取決於你對一部音樂播放機的要求。

易用?當然!

易用和美觀的外形,是iPod賴以成功的特色。作為iPod家族的小弟,Shuffle當然亳不遜色。界面只有五個按鈕和一個推制;推制是開關/模式選 擇,而基本功能如播放/暫停、音量控制、向前/後跳軌、fast forward/reverse都在正面的五個按鈕上。按鈕的排列和iPod的click wheel相似,加上iPod招牌”易花”白膠外殼,雖然沒有click wheel,但仍十分醒目易認。除了剛開始用的時候推制有點緊和對位比較難以外,其他按鈕的反應都極佳,而且十分就手,只用觸覺操作絕無難度。電量方面, 官方數字為十二小時,個人無責任測試時Shuffle輕鬆達標。

iPod Shuffle有兩個播放模式:順序播放和Shuffle。順序播放顧名思義、Shuffle則是一般播放機都會有的random play。功能其實很一般,但慣用一般CD/MD/MP3播放機的用家可能需要較多時間適應,例如沒有螢幕,選曲會比較困難。

軟件方面,如其他iPod一樣,附送的iTunes是為Shuffle抄歌的唯一辦法。雖然別無選擇,但用家可以自建playlist, 亦可用iTunes的Autofill功能,以歌曲的播放次數/用家評分/音軌種類等原素隨機選曲並抄入playlist,和Shuffle之名有異曲同 弓之妙。另一方面,iTunes可以快捷地把CD轉錄成MP3檔或AAC檔(註1),慣聽CD的用家可以輕易把自己的CD轉錄並抄上Shuffle,極為 方便。由於Shuffle使用USB2.0介面,故此抄歌速度快極有限,但正因為容量較小,抄滿一部1GB的Shuffle只需要5-10分鐘,可以接 受。

在音色上,梗看Shuffle短小精捍,其實音色極佳,低音強勁有力,高音亦清脆琍落,音量輸出更是出奇地強,推至七成己是極大聲, 最高更絕對可以打壞耳 機兼震聾耳朶。匹配Sennheiser MX500己經有極佳表現,用上筆者的Audio Technica ATH-EM7 SV,音色更是滑如絲綢。另外,網上有人曾把Shuffle與其他iPod及MP3播放機比較,結果竟然是Shuffle大勝(註2),可見 Shuffle並未因平價而在用料上減省,其講究可見一班。

iPod Shuffle適合你嗎?正如筆者開始時所講,每人用隨身聽的習慣不同,Shuffle的簡約不一定適合。它的容量小,自然可放的歌不會多(1GB的話, 320kbps的歌一百首左右),沒有螢幕或其他功能(收音機、錄音等)亦可能令部分買家卻步。然而,如果把它當作一部只播放你喜歡的歌曲的收音機,它其 實是十分稱職的。因為輕如無物,Shuffle十分適合運動時使用,用附送的頸繩掛在頸上極為輕便,用armband(須另購)亦可,唯一要注意的可能是 給搶掉吧。(由於頸繩是連在USB插上的蓋子上,其實很容易被搶掉的。)

體貼的設計+超低售價+品牌=成功要素?

行筆至 此,大家可能會認為Shuffle在功能上並不特出,要在亞洲區各大MP3廠商手上分一杯羹並不容易。﹔無疑,Shuffle推出只有三個月,要推 測這小傢伙對MP3市場中長期的影響並不容易。只是,蘋果聲稱在上年十二月至本年二月(即Shuffle推出後一個月),iPod在全球flash memory播放機市場的佔有率竟然由0%直跳至43%(註3);由於iPod糸列只有Shuffle是用flash memory,故此Shuffle的銷量直接反映在佔有率上,即Shuffle已在某情度上已攻破flash memory播放機市場。而在三月前,Shuffle在全球各地一直賣斷市,需求大得驚人。iPod家的小弟,實力可不容忽視。而事實上,就筆者所見,近 日在街上用iPod的人漸多,相信大部份會是Shuffle用家。(當然,某寬頻供應商送Shuffle會是其中一大原因。) 新加坡大廠Creative本星期公佈業績倒退時,矛頭便直指蘋果大割價令他們必須跟隨,利錢大減(註4)。

iPod Shuffle為甚麼能一嗚驚人?售價自然是其中一大原因,但蘋果不斷追求優良的”使用經驗”(即洋文所謂user experience,或是中文所謂的”好用”)的努力,以至iPod追上潮流的設計功勞亦不少。例子:筆者經常把Shuffle放在衣袋中,然後直接透 過衣服作簡單操作(fast forward/reverse之類),一切全靠觸覺,正因為介面和模式簡單。雖然其他播放機都可能操作簡便,然而他們卻沒有其他的優勢,如價錢、體貼而 入時的設計、iPod的品牌效應等。蘋果只是以短短一季的時間,便以Shuffle再一次証明市場觸覺加上設計和合理的定價才是在consumer electronics市場的致勝之道。深明此道的蘋果,不發達才怪!
